HIPAAT Demonstrates its Key to the 'Lock Box' Issue at OHA Healthachieve 2005

TORONTO, ON – October 31, 2005 – HIPAAT Inc. (HIPAAT), a leading provider of interoperable IT safety, privacy and security solutions for healthcare, demonstrates its solution to the “lock box” provisions of Ontario's Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) at OHA HealthAchieve2005 (booth 314, Silicon Alley) in Toronto, October 31 and November 1. HIPAAT demonstrates two separate, integrated products: Privacy eSuite^TM, a stand-alone, web-based document management tool and consent directives recording system, and Privacy Manager^TM, a consent directives management system. These products bring simplified, secure access to patient information, including patient privacy directives, to clinicians.

Effective November 1, 2005, PHIPA mandates healthcare providers to enable patients to withhold or withdraw consent to the use or disclosure of their PHI – informally called the “lock box” provisions. Patients will be entitled to restrict certain healthcare providers from accessing some or all of their PHI, or restrict all providers from accessing certain parts of their health record. Privacy eSuite^TM and Privacy Manager^TM enable caregivers to record and manage patient consent directives and other privacy-related information, including requests to access or correct personal health information.

“Healthcare providers are struggling to find a way to administer the lock box provisions,” said Terry Callahan, HIPAAT managing director. “Many caregivers are resorting to an interim paper-based system to record patient consent directives (lock box instructions). Our software allows them to more proactively record restrictions for the long term, and manage access to those restrictions and the related PHI. For critical care situations, our software provides emergency override access to locked information. Such access is audited for security purposes, but ensures that clinicians are never without the PHI they require.
