Mission

Our mission is to empower patients and enable providers with innovative healthcare IT privacy and security solutions that enhance patient safety.

About Us

HIPAAT was founded in 2002 in recognition of a growing need for health information privacy management. Our company provides consent management and security auditing solutions to healthcare.

The company name is an acronym originally based on the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Standing for Health Information Protection and Associated Technologies, the HIPAAT name stands for our unchanging purpose – to protect health information – and the adaptable nature of our solutions.

Our Logo

Our logo reflects our patient-centric focus:

Privacy
Our software provides patients with the ability to restrict access to sensitive personal health information (PHI).

Safety
Although patient information privacy is important, patient care is critical – so we enable caregivers to have override or 'break the glass' access to restricted PHI in emergency situations, legislation permitting. This enables caregivers to respect patient privacy while still providing uninterrupted care.

Security
Auditing is required to ensure patient privacy. Our software generates an audit trail for all access – and attempted access – to PHI. When a clinician overrides a privacy restriction, the privacy officer is automatically notified by e-mail or pager, allowing them to make the patient aware of the breach and the reason for it.

Market Focus

Hospitals and health networks, health information exchanges (HIEs) and healthcare IT vendors, e.g. EHRs/EMRs, PHRs, clinical applications

Solutions

Since inception, HIPAAT has focused on developing interoperable, automated consent management and auditing software.

Our software balances consumer information privacy with the clinical need to access PHI. Our vendor-neutral approach enables stakeholders at all levels of health information exchange to implement, enforce and audit consumer, organizational and jurisdictional privacy policies.

In 2006, we unbundled our core solution into SOA-based Web services. In 2009, we updated the software to follow – and optimize – HITSP-recommended standards (see below) to address American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) requirements.

Our solution set includes myConsentMinder, Privacy eSuite, Privacy Manager and Universal Audit Repository.

Standards Activities

International standards shape our products and how we do business.

We participate in the U.S. Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) Security, Privacy and Infrastructure Technical Committee (SPI-TC) and Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS).

We remain current with international standards initiatives such as Infoway’s Standards Collaborative (Canada), Health Level Seven (HL7) and Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE).

Our products support HITSP-recommended constructs, service collaborations and recommended standards, including OASIS XACML 2.0 and 3.0 and XSPA.
